Maria Chin cries foul over ‘serious errors’ in postal voter roll

(04-05-2018)

The 14th General Election. Independent candidate Maria Chin Abdullah has called into question the integrity of the electoral roll after allegedly discovering “major discrepancies” for Taman Medan, which she claimed has affected one in six postal voters registered there. “My team has uncovered that a shocking number of postal voters are listed in a different polling district compared to what is listed in the electoral roll. “By checking the postal voter electoral roll against the gazetted electoral roll, we found that a total of 17.1 percent of postal voters in Taman Medan are listed under the wrong voting districts,” she said in a statement today.

This was a problem, Maria stressed, as such discrepancies would allow a voter to first vote as a postal voter, and yet remain in the gazetted electoral roll so they may vote again on polling day on May 9 in the other polling district. She pointed out that other inconsistencies discovered included IC numbers and names, which differed from the gazetted electoral roll. Taman Medan is a state seat under the Petaling Jaya parliamentary constituency which Maria is contesting in. Maria resigned as chair of electoral reforms group Bersih in order to contest in the coming general election as an independent under the Pakatan Harapan banner. The Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat was formerly known as PJ Selatan, but was changed following the Election Commission’s recent redelineation exercise.

“These errors are concentrated in one section of the list… the petugas section. Are we supposed to believe that the Election Commission is so incompetent and the major irregularities found here are a result of nothing more than a technical defect in their system? “The scale of such discrepancies raises a question mark over the integrity of the gazetted electoral roll, and possibly the legitimacy of the election itself,” her statement read. Maria called on the EC to be more transparent in conducting postal voting, as such discrepancies could have a huge impact in marginal seats.

She said it was the commission’s role to ensure the gazetted electoral roll was free from irregularities, adding that the electoral body would not wish to be seen to be tilting the polls in favour of BN.

Putrajaya perlu dipulangkan semula kepada Tun M – Hannah Yeoh

(04-05-2018)

(04-05-2018)

Putrajaya malam tadi melakar sejarah apabila kawasan parkir bersebelahan Masjid Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin dibanjiri ribuan hadirin bagi mendengar amanat tokoh utama Pakatan Harapan (HARAPAN) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr M to deliver special address on eve of GE14

(04-05-2018)

The 14th General Election. Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be delivering a special address to Malaysians on May 8 – the eve of polling day – at 10pm in Langkawi. Bersatu youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said Mahathir’s speech will be also be aired live on Facebook and Harapan aimed to reach out to some 10 million voters nationwide. “At the same time, at all the 222 parliament seats, there will be mega ceramahs. At 10pm, all of the ceramahs will be halted to make way for Mahathir’s special address,” he said during a joint press conference with Mahathir at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya today.

Mahathir, meanwhile, said he believes that BN would have reasons to be frightened by his announcement today. “And of course the government will think of ways to stop us from reaching the people. “That has been the way of the BN government,” Mahathir claimed. Mahathir also reiterated that the sign of fear towards him could be seen as even his photos on Harapan’s campaign posters were cut out by the Election Commission. “So this one we’re going to make full use of the social media and we want to reach 10 million people. 10 million voters,” he stressed. When asked his views about Harapan’s campaign so far, Mahathir noted there has been mounting interests as the number of crowds who attended their rallies had swelled up to 40,000 in certain areas. “Before parliament was dissolved we would expect four to five thousand people, but now the figures had gone up to 20,000, 25,000 and in Kuantan, there were 40,000 people who came.”

He added that the large turnout was also despite various attempts to restrict Harapan from holding their campaigns.
